Thrombosis fellowships offer advanced training for physicians and pharmacists in the diagnosis and management of thrombotic disorders. Training programs have traditionally been heavily focused on venous thromboembolism, while arterial thrombosis, particularly stroke, is often not specifically covered. Stroke is a frequent and important manifestation of thrombosis, and specialized knowledge is required to understand the multitude of etiologies and corresponding tailored treatment strategies. Moreover, stroke can be an expression of an underlying systemic pro-thrombotic state with simultaneous venous and arterial events. The diagnosis and treatment of stroke and of thromboembolism are well managed by stroke neurologists and thrombosis specialists, respectively. The historical lack of cross-training between these specialties, however, may result in suboptimal practitioner knowledge, skill, and experience in the management of patients with stroke.
